The Fiefs Vendéens AOC dates from 1984 (previously VDQS) and comprises 20 communes in the Vendée formerly Bas-Poitou) department on the central west (Atlantic) coast of France, immediately south of the Pays Nantais of Muscadet fame, near Poitiers in the western half of the former Poitou province. The region is located near the mouth of the Loire, around 28 miles (45km) south of Nantes (in the Muscadet zone), and is therefore considered a southern extension of the Pays Nantais. Five communes called Brem (Brem-sur-Mer), Chantonnay (since 2011), Mareuil (the main one), Pissotte, and Vix can append their names to that of the AOC.
