Estate vineyards | In 2005 when I visited there were 60ha of vines. Part of the crop was being sold to Melini with the rest vinified in Poggibonsi by Melini. From 2005 they will have their own winery. The Vignale estate used to belong to the owners of Castello di Meleto (then they seem to have split).
Relais Fattoria Vignale | The history of the Relais Fattoria Vignale is linked with the history of the Chianti wine. In 1773 after a visit to the Chianti region, Peter Leopold Grand Duke of Lorraine wrote about the Falconi family, Vignale’s then owners, that “they are trading and sending wine to England.” The Pianigiani family who succeded the Falconis greatly developed the wine production. In August 1924 Baldassarre Pianigiani, the “Notary” of Chianti, drew up the deed of partnership which created the Gallo Nero (Black Rooster) and the Consortium for the defence of Chianti Classico. Vignale is to this day the legal seat of the “Consortium Vino Chianti Classico” as well as of the “Centre of historical studies of the Chianti region” (it still has some old maps and documents there showing the early days of the Consorzio). What was the Vignale winery was moved down to the end of the village in the late 1980s where there is more space. This allowed the main building to become the Relais Vignale, an hotel with a terrace overlooking the vineyards, swimming pool and 42 rooms of which 5 suites, all with air con and mini bar. The cellar has been made into Ristorante La Taverna. There is also wine shop (Enoteca) which stocks Vignale’s wines as well as those from other producers, plus grappas, olive oil, honey, jellies and other products. Vignale also has a restaurant called Ristorante Vignale which is 300 metres from the Relais (closed Thursday).
