Fattoi is a family-owned estate winery in Santa Restituta, a locality in the south-west of the Montalcino region of Italy. Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG red wines are made. Nearby wineries include Soldera, Máté and the Gaja family’s Pieve di Santa Restituta

Background: Ofelio Fattoi purchased the property around 1965 and has been producing Brunello since 1979. The first years were hard, after many sacrifices Ofelio and his sons, Leonardo and Lamberto, and daughter-in-law Ofelia managed to build a small-medium winery that for nearly 40 years has been producing wine and oil with the same passion and dedication as it once was.

Vineyards2015 70 hectares (173 acres) of land in total of which 9.5 hectares (23.5 acres) are Sangiovese vines scattered around the Pieve di Santa Restituta.

Other crops: 4.5 hectares (10.9 acres) are olives, 28 hectares (69.2 acres) are woodland and the remainder is given to land for sowable crops (‘seminativo‘) such as wheat (frumento).

Winemaking: 100% hand picked. Ezio Rivella has consulted on winemaking. 33-45hl Slavonian oak botti.

Red wines

Rosso di Montalcino DOC2011 At the consorzio with Ian d’Agata Tuesday 28th May 2013: Deepish crimson, a bit ‘tanky’, needs air, crisp fruit, some greeness, bit sweet’n sour, simple. | 2012 20,000 bottles. Quite thick (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 20,000 bottles. Bit sweet and sour, OK, just a hint of funk or at least blancmange and a little bit short (Anteprima 2015). | 2014 Simple fresh fruit (Anteprima 2016).

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG2000 Chocolatey tannins, somewhat dry, could be better with selection (Anteprima 2005). | 2009 23,000 bottles. Bit simple and extracted, lacks a bit of lift (Anteprima 2014). | 2009 L06 13. Ruby garnet robe with the accent on ruby. Quite a flat nose. Sweet entry, quite roasted, ephemeral, the immediacy is attractive if perhaps over-simple for purists. Not a wine for ageing at the Consorzio Tues 27th May 2014 with Dr Ian d’Agata and others. | 2010 26,000 bottles. 36 months in botti. Sweet and fluffy, a bit green and simple (Anteprima 2015). | 2011 Easy, join-the-dots winemaking (Anteprima 2016).

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva2003 Bottled. | 2006 Bottled. | 2007 Bottled. | 2008 3,200 bottles. Some pepper, bit simple, green at end (Anteprima 2014). | 2008 L05 13. 14%. Fluid, smooth, simple red fruit, sticky raspberries, bit short, crowd-pleaser for the here and now. Get it before it gets too volatile, tasted blind at the Consorzio Tues 27th May 2014 with Dr Ian d’Agata and others. | 2010 Simple (Anteprima 2016).
