Classico is a term used in Italy  for Classico (Classic) DOC and DOCG wines, and Storico (Historical) for DOCG and DOC sparkling wines, are quaifications reserved in Italy for wines from areas with a long history of quality wine production. The Classico denomination refers to a sub-area indicated by a particular disciplinare or protocol, in theory corresponding to the historical production zone of a specific wine. An example is the difference between Chianti DOCG wine, produced in a vast area of Tuscany, and Chianti Classico DOCG wine, produced instead in the small area that historically has always been associated with this wine. Other examples include Valpolicella Classico DOC, Orvieto Classico DOC, Verdicchio Castello di Jesi Classico DOC, Soave Classico DOC, Garda Classico DOC, and Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG.
