Chianti Montespertoli DOCG or ‘Chianti from Montespertoli’ is a red wine from a small enclave between Empoli and the Elsa valley in the province of Florence in Tuscany, Italy. The Chianti MontespertoliDOCG dates from 1997 when Montespertoli became a recognised sub-zone within the wider Chianti DOCG region for its red wines. The DOCG’s name translates as ‘ the hills of Montespertoli‘.

The territory that is now part of the Montespertoli sub-zone was, up to the 1996 harvest, included for a third in the Colli Fiorentini sub-zone and for two thirds without a sub-zone (although it is part of the Chianti wine production area).

Chianti Montespertoli was formerly one of seven sub-denominations incorporated in the Chianti DOCG –which dates from 1984–and joined having been previously part of the Chianti Colli Fiorentini sub-zone.

Terroir: The production zone lies in the hills around Montespertoli town, 19 miles (30kms) south-west of and overlooking Florence (Firenze), in the area between the two valleys of Val di Pesa and Val d’Elsa, in a chain of hills in an open, luminous countryside. Vin Santo is bottled under the Vinsanto del Chianti DOC Montespertoli.

The territory of the sub-zone coincides with the municipal territory of Montespertoli extending over an area of 125 km². About a third of the territory (the south and south-east part, with an altitude varying between 257 and 442 m above sea level) is also part of the Colli Fiorentini sub-area. The vineyard area is about 2200 hectares even if only 1400 are entitled to the recognition of the Chianti DOCG. The altitude of the entire sub-area varies from 170 to 442 m above sea level.

The territory that is now part of the Montespertoli sub-zone was up to the 1996 harvest included for a third in the Colli Fiorentini sub-zone and for two thirds without a sub-zone (although it is part of the Chianti wine production area), as had been decided with the Decree Ministerial of 31 July 1932. In 1997 the whole municipal territory was included in the new sub-area, called Montespertoli.

Vineyards: The vineyards cover around 1,400ha (3,460 acres).
