Château de Carles is an estate in Saillans in the Fronsadais on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. It produces red wine under the Fronsac AOC.

Owner: Antoine Chastenet de Castaing. SCEV Château de Carles – M. & Mme Droulers.

The estate: The magnificent medieval chateau is located north-west of the hamlet of Saillans, from a hill site which overlooks the Isle river, hence round towers at either end. Its history dates to the conquest of Aquitaine by the young king of the Francs, Carles, the future Emperor Charlemagne.

It was built in its current form in the 15th and 16th centuries, on the hillock where in 769 Charlemagne established his camp during his conquest of Aquitaine, on his way to Spain. Montaigne and La Boëtie liked to meet there and later, in the 18th century, he fell to the Marquise Boufflers, a spiritual friend of Jean Jacques Rousseau.

For over a hundred years in the Chastenet de Castaing family, the current generation, represented by Constance and Stéphane Droulers, has committed to giving this magnificent domain the lustre that has been its over the centuries.

Vineyards: 20ha. 90% Merlot, 10% Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Clay and clay-limestone over molasse du Fronsadais. ‘On the côte north-east of Saillans overlooking the Isle valley,’ (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.562).
