Charentais IGP, previously Vin de Pays Charentais, covers wines of all three colours from the Charente region of France, an area just north of the Gironde (Bordeaux) and better known for its Cognac. The Charente is also significant for the production of rootstocks.

Wine grapes: An ‘Ampélopole’ was set up by the Conservatoire du Vignoble Charentais to try to resurrect some of the 500 ‘lost’ grape varieties found in the region. Trial micro-vinifications will be made in a special cellar (Source: Réussir Vigne, Jul/Aug 2008 No 143, p.27).
