CENTRAL ADIGE VALLEY in the Alto Adige (Südtirol) region of northern Italy stretches from Bolzano (‘Bozen’) to Merano (‘Meran’). This is the Terlan Basin, named after the town of Terlano (‘Terlan’), and also including Nals, and Andrian. The climate is dry and (sandy loam) soils are poor (low-humus) but heat-retentive, forcing vines to root deeply to find water yet.
