Its main wines are Sant’Antimo Rosso DOC, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCGCasanuova delle Cerbaie’s winery is located beneath the town of Montalcino in the northern sector of the region.

Owner: Bought in 2008 by Roy Welland (US citizen, born 1962 in New York).

Sales: USA main market (Anteprima 2014).

Staff: MD: Alessandro Brigidi. He was born in Montalcino. “My father and grandfather are musicians. When I was a child, I studied music. Even now when I’m not at work, I relax enjoy myself playing with my band.”

Vineyards: 15ha of land of which 10ha are vines. Of this, 5.5ha are Brunello and 1.5ha are Rosso di Montalcino, plus 3ha of Merlot and Sangiovese for Sant’Antimo DOC.

Terroir: The vineyards are on the Montosoli hill and stretch to the base of the hill on which Montalcino lies. . 250 to 350 meters above sea level on a clay soil with calcareous rocks. I think 1.5ha of vines are on Montosoli with the rest running off the hill. Approximately 300 metres above sea level. Eocene soil which comprises calcareous and argillaceous marl and conglomerate rocks. Mainly south-west facing. Moderate climate due to shelter from cold north winds and hot winds like the Sirocco from the west.

Winemaking: New winemaking equipment and wood since 2008 under the new owner.

Red wines

Sant’Antimo DOC Rosso, Il Cerbaione: Mainly Sangiovese, plus Merlot. Ten months in new French oak barriques, before spending another six months in barriques that have been used once and therefore offer more gentle tannins.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC: 2012 Aged in 20hl Stockinger botti (bought in 2008). Quite extracted (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 2,600 bottles. Bit sappy and fluid, dry tannin, and jelly fruit, populist and not heavy (Anteprima 2015).

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Il Cerbaione: Fermented up to 33 ºC. 36 months in 40hl Slavonian oak botti. | 2000 Rich style, well constructed, clear wild fruit, chocolate and decent intensity (Anteprima 2005). | 2008 Debut under the new American owner. | 2009 19,000 bottles. 30 months in 20hl botti then goes into vat in March for bottling. Promising cedar, then a bit tired on finish, oxidised end, shame, drying out, acetic–and not yet bottled (Anteprima 2014). | 2010 16,000 bottles. Bit woody, nice sweet wild fruit (Anteprima 2015). | 2011 Very nice perfume, elegant, good, bit of blur but very nice fruit (Anteprima 2016).

Brunello di Montalcino DOC Riserva: Selected from the best Brunello, so (I think). 36 months in 40hl Slavonian oak botti plus 12 months in French barrels. | 2010 Very nice fruit and weight, succulent, elegant (Anteprima 2016).
