Caldaro or Lago di Caldaro, or Kaltersee or Kalterer DOC are respectively the Italian and German names for a red wine based on 85-100% Schiava (see Schiava group), the Grossa, Gentile and Grigia sub-varieties) grown in the Trentino-Alto Adige region in northern Italy. Caldaro or Lago di Caldaro, or Kaltersee refers to Lake Kaltern. The DOC dates from 1970, Trentino-Alto Adige’s first, and is arguably Trentino-Alto Adige’s finest red. Late-harvested (sweet) wines are called Scelto (Auslese in German.
