Cafaggio is an organic estate winery is located in Greve-in-Chianti hamlet in Panzano in Chianti commune in Florence (‘Firenze’) province, Tuscany (‘Toscana’), Italy. Cafaggio makes Chianti Classico DOCG red wines.

Owner: In the early 19th-century the estate was bought by the Bodi family. In 1967 it was acquired by the Farkas family, originally as a holiday retreat when it was in a bad state. From 1967 Stefano Farkas began restoring the completely abandoned buildings, including the cellar and planted vines and olives. The one vineyard which had remained intact, Solatio Basilica, was replanted and produced a Chianti Classico Riserva until 1995. From spring 2005 Villa Cafaggio has been under the control of Cantina La-Vis (a co-op in Trentino).

History: There have been vines here since 1498.

Staff: Consultant: Giseppe Caviola (2019). Vineyards: From the late 1960s to the early 1970s Farkas replanted over 20ha of vines, bringing back to life the San Martino vineyard, located near the ancient church of San Martino in Cecion. The vines are in the Conca d’Oro in Panzano in Chianti. Solatio Basilica vineyard.

In 1986, Stefano Farkas planted 4,000 Cabernet Sauvignon vines (two clones) on a (22 year-old) Canaiolo vineyard. This was used in 1989 for the first time in the Supertuscan Cortaccio. Following this, more Cabernet Sauvignon (using a different clone) was planted in 1991 and 1995. In 1991 Stefano Farkas planted another 5ha with a special clone of Sangiovese, followed by another 15ha in 1998 and 2ha in 1999. He participated in the “Chianti Classico 2000” project and identified the best clones of Sangiovese for his area.
