Birkweiler Mandelberg is a vineyard site (‘Einzellage) in Birkweiler, south-west of the town and classified as an Erste Lage by the VDP. The Dr Wehrheim estate describes Mandelberg as a ‘basin protected to the west by the Hohenberg and to the east by the Taschberg.’ South-facing. Altitudes from around 220 to 320 metres above sea level with a gradient of up to 30 percent. Three different soil types: sandstones coloured by weathering, Muschelkalk (shell limestone), Rotliegende (“red slate”). Planted varieties: Riesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) which is especially good here (eg. from Weingut Dr Wehrheim on Muschelkalk), Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc. Ample sunlight hours (South south-east aspect) and the heat retention provided by stones in the vineyard ensure maturity for all wines grown here.
