Battenfeld Spanier is located in Hohen-Sülzen in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. This is at the southernmost tip of the Wonnegau district, not far from Worms.

Owner: The estate is owned by Hans-Oliver Spanier (b1971) and his wife Carolin Spanier-Gillot of Kühling-Gillot. Since 2006 the husband and wife team have combined their wine operations. Hans-Olivier Spanier took over here in 1993 from his parents and converted to organics. At that time the winery was called simply Weingut Spanier. In 1997 Spanier joined his estate with the neighbouring Battenfeld estate.

Vineyards: 28 hecares of vines in Mölsheim, Nieder-Flörsheim and Hohen-Sülzen.

Terroir:The best vineyards are transversed by thick, underground beds of limestone from which the roots of the vines can absorb their final nutrients during the hot months of summer. For Spanier, Riesling acts as a translator that interprets the influence of the southern Wonnegau’s extremely lime-rich soils in wine.

Certification: 1993 Went organic. | 1999 First vintage with full organic certification.

Memberships: Renaissance des Appellations.
