Baricci Colombaio Montosoli or Baricci for short is a family owned estate winery located in Montalcino, on the prized area north of the town called Montosoli. The Baricci family’s main wines are Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. The estate was created by Nello Baricci (Montalcino, 1921 – Montalcino, 2017), described by the family as ‘a pioneer of local viticulture, sharecropper, then a very clear headed entrepreneur,’. His nephews Federico Buffi and Francesco Buffi now run the estate, whose full name in Colombaio di Montosoli. Federico Buffi’s cousin is Davide.
Estate vineyards: 12ha of land of which 5ha are vines.
Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Colombaio di Montosoli: 2012 L4147. Nice bright soft red/black fruit, wild, subtle, some funk, digestible and smooth at dinner at 32 Viale Piave with Savino (roast chicken) on Friday 7th Nov 2014. Similar at Viale Piave in early December 2014.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Colombaio di Montosoli: 2000 Youthful style, if a bit stinky (Anteprima 2005). | 2009 14.5%. L3225. Nice mid-weight red fruit, soft, bit of funk, ripe and savoury, easy to drink, changes in the glass, dynamic wine, good typicity, open textured fruit with well structured tannins/acid behind, pleasurable and easy to “get into”, very much the anthesis to a typical impenetrable Brunello (tasted in early October 2014 having been given the bottle after visiting the winery). | 2012 Bright then a bit of fade at end, traditional style with dry red fruit flavour, and unforced weight (Anteprima 2017). | 2015 Well balanced in terms of tannin and fruit, has a centre to it, shows potential (Anteprima 2019).
