Avensan is a commune in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Bordeaux region whose red wines qualify for the Médoc, Haut-Médoc and/or Moulis-en-Médoc AOCs. Avensan lies west of Soussans, south-east of but adjacent to Moulis-en-Médoc. Avensan’s vineyards lie 7 km from the Gironde estuary, west of Lamarque, and vie with forest, farms and (historically) gravel quarries for space. The surviving gravel in Avensan runs in a kilometre wide band from the south east to the north west and is almost entirely occupied by vineyards.
