Australia, Demographics: ‘Australia is decreasingly white and no longer very British–only 5% of its inhabitants were born there. There was an influx of the “Ten-pound Poms“ (Poms or Pommies is Australian slang for Britons) who took up the offer of cut-rate passage out of the UK to swap ‘stuffy post-Second World War Britain to settle in Australia for a new life by the beach’ (The Economist: 13th June 2020, p.21). Britain is the third biggest source of immigrants after India and China (The Economist: ‘Crown Duels’, 18th July 2020, p.42).
