The Amalfi Coast (La Costiera Amalfitana in Italian) is a 31 mile (50km) stretch of coast in the Gulf of Salerno and south of the Sorrento Peninsula in the Campania region of Italy. Famous holiday destination, it is characterized by steep cliffs and a jagged coast dotted with small beaches and pastel-colored fishing villages. The coastal road between the port city of Salerno and the rocky ridge of Sorrento winds through an area of sumptuous villas, terraced vineyards (see Costa d’Amalfi DOC) and lemon groves overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its most famous places include Positano, Ravello and Amalfi itself.
