Weingut Wimmer-Czerny is a Biodynamic estate winery in the Wagram sub-region of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in Austria.

Owner: Hans Czerny (0676.9354094) and his family, his wife Astrid, daughter Theresa (1998), son Matthias (2000), and son Johannes (2003). Hans Czerny started making wine here in 1987 and in 1993 took over from Anneliese and Johann Wimmer.

Vineyards: 15 hectares (38 acres) in Fels, Gösing and Feuersbrunn in the Wagram sub-region of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich). The main variety at 60% is Grüner Veltliner (including from from Ried Weelfel and Mitterweg), then Riesling, Roter Veltliner (the century-old speciality of our region) and Zweigelt. The remaining 15% is Weißburgunder or Pinot Blanc (from Ried Scheiben), Traminer (from Ried Mitterweg), Sauvignon Blanc. Also Malvasier (Früher Veltliner) from Ried Floss, Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir).

Terroir: South facing overlooking to the Danube valley from 220-370 metres (720-1,200 feet), the river lying at 180 metres (590 feet). Big day-night temperature variation. Loess soils, 20 metres (65 feet) deep.

Single vineyard sites: Weelfel, Fumberg, Scheiben, Hammer.

Organics: Began working with cover crops in the 1980s as loess is rich in minerals but not so good at holding nitrogen or organic matter.

Certification2006 First vintage with full Demeter Biodynamic certification. | 2017 Still certified biodynamic by Demeter.

Polyculture: 12 hectares (30 acres) of non-vineyard land. Heritage livestock breeds (chickens, pigs).

Winemaking: Hand picked grapes. Gravity. Native yeasts. Long lees ageing. Little filtering.

Sparkling wines

Pur Sparkling: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sant Laurent. 11% alcohol. 12-15 grammes per litre residual sugar. Easy, uncomplicated, well made (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Pur Hefeabstich: 2016 Mainly Grüner Veltliner. MLF. Lovely saline yellow fruit (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

White wines

Grüner Veltliner, Hefeabstich 2017 6 months on fine lees. MLF. Bottled at 6 months. Light filtration. Lovely salty flavours (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Grüner Veltliner, Fumberg: Hill site, loess soils. 2016 Salty yellow fruit, ripe but not heavy (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Grüner Veltliner, Weelfel On marine sediments comprising sand, silicates and gravel, with two distinct areas which may or may not be picked together, dependding on the vintage. Dry site = not affected by downy mildew (peronospera). 2016 Well textured (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Grüner Veltliner, Felser Berg:

Sauvignon Blanc:

Riesling, Weelfel Planted in 1990. 2015 Dry vintage. Ripe but crisp (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Riesling, GÖSINGER Freiheit:

Traminer, Trio: Traminer, yellow Traminer and Gewürztraminer.

Weissburgunder, Scheiben: Loess soils. Vines planted 1960s. 2016 Classic Pinot Blanc, fleshy, creamy, nicely narrow (Demeter Austria tasting, 2018).

Red wines

Roter Veltliner Alte Reben: Old vines.

Wine production: 80,000 bottles a year, 90% white wine.
