Terre Tollesi or Tullum DOC is the first DOC in the Abruzzo region on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It was recognised in 2008. 2009 was the first vintage. The wines come from the municipality of Tollo, in Chieti (CH) province, in the area between Pescara, Chieti and Ortona where Tollo is located). The first wine producers here, the Romans called the town Tullum Castrum. Tollo was completely destroyed during the Second World War. It’s wine production has given a new lease of life.

Viticulture: Vineyards must be sited away from the valley floor, above 80msl. Planting density must be 3,300 vines/ha. The DOP recognition has also added a symbolic value for the territory:

Spumante: 60% minimum Chardonnay.

Bianco & Bianco Superiore: 75% minimum Trebbiano Toscano and/or Abruzzese 25% Pecorino [see Feudo Antico], Passerina, Falanghina or other non-aromatic grapes. The latter can be bottled as varietal wines (90% minimum).

Bianco Passito: 90% minimum Moscato or Malvasia.

 Rosso, Rosso Riserva & Novello: 90-100% Montepulciano, 0-10% Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese etc. The latter can be bottled as varietal wines (90% minimum).

Rosso Passito: 90% Montepulciano minimum + 10% Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese etc.
