Poggio al Tesoro is a winery in the Bolgheri region on the Tuscan coast of Italy. It was jointly acquired in 2001 by the Allegrini family (Marisa Allegrini) and Leonardo Lo Cascio, head of U.S. wine importer and distributor Winebow (Allegrini’s first venture outside their Valpolicella base). For their second co-investment see Poggio San Polo in Montalcino.

Vineyards, wine production: Poggio al Tesoro is a 70-ha (173-acre) property in the coastal area of Bolgheri in Bolgheri. After the 2001 change of ownership the first vineyard the new owners bought was Le Sondraia, next door to Ornellaia, and which had been previously rented by them. The main source of Cabernet Sauvignon is a 3-ha plot called Via Bolgherese, at 56 m (184 ft), with deep, coarse red sand soils, well-drained and gravelly. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and more Cabernet Sauvignon are grown in the 12-ha Le Sondraie vineyard. Vermentino grapes for the unoaked Solosole are also grown in Le Sondraie. West facing, it has deep sandy soils with gravel and clay. 65ha of vines producing 330,000 bottles (Gambero Rosso: 2015).

Terroir: Hill sites comprise alluvial deposits rich in iron oxide. There are also eastern flatlands, and a sandier in the west.

Winemaking: Was under Nicola Biasi (also winemaker at Poggio San Polo) but he has since left.
