Piombaia is a certified organic estate winery in Località Piombaia in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy and southwest of Montalcino itself. Its red wines are Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. The Piombaia estate was born from the union of the Rossi family (from Montalcino) and the Cantini Family (from Pisa), all now in its third generation.

Owners: The estate is run day to day by Roberto Cantini’s daughter Cecilia who handles marketing and his sons, Francesco who is an agronomist and Vittorio Cantini who is in charge of production.

Estate vineyards: 2015 12ha of vines of which 10.5ha Sangiovese and 1.5ha of Merlot (the Merlot grapes are sold).

The second site is ‘Piombaia’, to the southwest of Montalcino, on the road for Sant’ Angelo in Colle, and around the “La Crocina”, on the road from Montalcino to Sant’ Antimo.

 

Organic certification: 2015 First vintage with full organic certification.

Organics & Biodynamics: From 1999/2000 stopped using weedkiller. From 2008 Filippo Ferrari of Vini Etici has consulted on organics and biodynamics. 100 litre copper dynamiser (which holds 60 litres) first used in March 2013. 500P and 501 from Fondazione Le Madri. Make compost. Work with cover crops.

Winery: Wines aged in (500-litre tonneaux, and larger botti.

Red wines

Rosso di Montalcino DOC2010 9,000 bottles. | 2011 9,000 bottles. Aged partly in older wood. | 2012 9,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: 2000 Clean fruit, no excess oak (Benvenuto Brunello 2005). | 2008 9,000 bottles. Deepish ruby (Benvenuto Brunello 2013). | 2009 8,000 bottles (Benvenuto Brunello 2014). | 2010 8,000 bottles.
