La Fortuna is an estate winery in Località Podere La Fortuna in the Montalcino region of Tuscany. Red wines are made under the Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Red and white wines are made under the Sant’Antimo DOC.

Owner: The Zannoni arrived at La Fortuna in 1907. Now in its fifth generation. Angiolino and Quirina, husband and wife, were the first generation. They made a small amount of wine. In 1950, Angiolino and Quirina handed the management of the farm to their son, Gino and his wife Iva Zannoni. They worked as sharecroppers, until they became independent in 1965, the year they purchased the farmstead. Their son Gioberto Zannoni (+39 347 9849180) and his wife Felicetta then followed. Gioberto’s son Angelo is now at the helm.

Vineyards: The estate and its historic vineyards and winery are in Località La Fortuna, Montalcino, an area on the hill as you drive down from Montalcino via the main road towards Buonconvento, just below the neighbour Fuligni (in Località Cottimelli, directly up the hill leading to Montalcino itself). More land was purchased in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area south of the town of Montalcino. The company has 33ha of land. This is divided into 11 hectares of specialized vineyard, 2 hectares of olive groves and 20 of land for sowable crops.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC, La Fortuna: 2011 Medium crimson core. Limpid, pinkish rim. Shy nose, red fruit there but hiding slightly, needs coaxing. Attractive palate, relaxed tannins, quite wide but not overbearing, with punchy raspberry fruit supporting. Clean finish with plenty of mouthwatering fruit to appreciate. Frank and savoury (at the consorzio with Ian d’Agata, 28 May 2013). | 2013 13,333 bottles. 6 months in barrrel. Menthol nose, quite cool, a bright and well executed modernist red (Anteprima 2015). | 2018 26,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, La Fortuna: 2000 Not much aroma, very light palate, bit tannic and dry, seem to have good terroir as old vine depth (Anteprima 2005). | 2010 20,000 bottles. 4 years in botti. Juicy red fruit, nice weight and clarity, good length and well rounded, with decent savoury tannin, and integrated alcohol (Anteprima 2015). | 2014 Mix of oak and cranberry fruit, light, a Rosso-Brunello style (Anteprima 2015). | 2015 33,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Giobi: 2015 2,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, La Fortuna : 2006 Bottled.
