Fattoria Poggiopiano is an estate winery in San Casciano in Val di Pesa (province of Florence) in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany.

Owner: The Bartoli family who bought the estate in 1993. Stefano Bartoli and his brother Alessandro (who I met in 2005). I think he is the boyfriend of Silvia Fiorentini from the consorzio.

Staff: Oen: Luca D’Attoma consulted until 2004. He was succeeded by Attilio Pagli.

Vineyards: In località Pisignano, San Casciano, on a wide and flat hill, which dominates the valley of Florence to the north and the valley that leads to Pisa to the west. All hill slopes, some north east facing. 350-420 metres. Medio impasto. River stones. Rootstocks: 1103 Paulsen. In 2015 there were around 10ha of vines plus around 8ha of rented vines. | 2019 The farm covers an area of ​​17 hectares, 9 of which are planted with vineyards. Sangiovese and Colorino del Valdarno.

Olives: Milled at a nearby frantoio.

Roosters: In 2005 they were working with the guy from Massanera to produce an authentic black rooster (maybe Livorno hens, not sure).

Winemaking: Some wooden vats; cement and steel.

Red wines

Chianti Classico DOCG, Poggiopiano2002 100% Sangiovese. 50% aged in 2 and 3 year old barrels. Not bad, probably some 2003 press wine in this, bit a coffee, and honey too and not entirely typical of the year (Visit 2005). | 2016 100% Sangiovese. 2017 100% Sangiovese. Plump, well made (Anteprima 2020).

Chianti Classico DOCG, La Tradizione2016 100% Sangiovese.

Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva: Alessandro Bartoli told me (Visit, 2005) he does not believe in Riserva.

Rosso di Sera, Toscana Rosso IGT2001 90% Sangiovese and Colorino del Valdarno. Best selection, 100% new oak for 12 months. Black fruit underneath excess toasty oak. | 2013 90% Sangiovese, 10% Colorino del Valdarno.

M’Ama Non M’Ama, Toscana Rosso: 2004 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. From tank, decent fresh dark berry. Luca D’Attoma supervised fermentation, Attilio Pagli did the rest. A little bit green and sherbet-like (Visit, 2005) 60,000 bottles.
