Fattoria Le Pupille is located in Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto on the edge of Morellino di Scansano DOCG in Grosseto Province in south west coastal TuscanyThe estate comprises 420ha and was once Elisabetta Geppetti’s grandparents’ holiday home. It produces wines under the Maremma Toscana DOC as well as Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Other land is given to olives, grain, cork oaks and pasture.

Owner: Founder Elisabetta Geppetti. She is credited with giving this area of Tuscany a profile via the estate’s flagship Super Tuscan, Saffredi. Her husband is Stefano Rizzi. She is now handing over to her daughter, Clara (Clara’s  brother is Ettore.) The estate comprises 420ha.

Vineyards: 2005 60 ha in production. Poggio Valente, a single cru. With grapes are in a plot just up the road from Mantellassi. Saffredi is the old vineyard where the old winery was. More vineyards by the new winery. | 2018 80ha of vines. Mosaic, scattered plots.

Biodiversity: Olives, grain, cork oaks, and pasture.

Winery2001 New cellars were built, near the elegant villa. Arched rooms for the barrels. An underground cellar is not possible as the water table is too high as they are so close to the Ombrone.

White wines

Maremma Toscana Bianco, Poggio Argentato: 2001 Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc.

Piemme: Petit Manseng.

Red wines

Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Fattoria Le PupilleSangiovese and Alicante, plus some Malvasia Nera instead of Ciliegiolo (which is too delicate). | 2004 Primary carbonic style (Argiano, March 2005).

Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Poggio Valente: Now a 100% Sangiovese but previously it was a single vineyard wine made instead of a riserva, from at least 40 yo Sangiovese and Alicante (Grenache Noir). | 1997 Bottled. | 1999 Bottled. | 2000 Bottled. |  2009 Sangiovese, Merlot.

Le Pupille: Now 100% Syrah.

Saffredi: A SuperTuscan1987 Toscana Rosso Debut. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante, from a vineyard called Saffredi. The idea had been to use Cabernet Sauvignon in a blend to improve their Sangiovese but as the Cabernet Sauvignon was so good they made a new wine for it. | 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Alicante. From the Saffredi vineyard. | 2009 Maremma Toscana Rosso: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Syrah. £60+. Rich smoky cedar, broad and intense and weighty, clear flavours, well weighted (DWWA 2013, Silver).

Sweet white wines

Maremma Toscana Bianco DOC, Solalto: Dried-grape (‘passito) sweet white. Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Fermented in stainless steel.
