Camigliano is an organic estate in the Camigliano sub-region of western Montalcino. Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG red wines are made. Other red wines include Sant’Antimo Rosso DOC In addition, a Moscadello di Montalcino DOC sweet white made from Moscato Bianco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat de Frontignan).

Owner: Gualtiero and Laura Ghezzi. Gualtiero is a construction engineer in Milan. In 1958 [1954] Gualtiero Ghezzi’s father bought the estate, including the town, in 1958.

Vineyards: 92 hectares of vines of which 50ha are for Brunello. Vines south of Montalcino, so warm, and at the western limit of Montalcino. Tufa and clay; land sloping towards the Maremma. Originally the estate comprised 1,000 hectares of vines but land was sold to Antinori at Pian delle Vigne. Still have 60 hectares of olive trees.

Polyculture: 200ha of cereals (which they make try to make organic products from Paola told me (Anteprima 2015); 200ha of woodland, 40ha of olives (5,000 trees).

Organic certification: 2017 First vintage with full organic certification.

Winery: Underground. Gravity (‘cascada’ or cascade).

Red wines

Cabernet: This was a Sant’Antimo DOC Rosso until 2008. From 2009 onwards it became a Toscana IGT. | 2008 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Not good: sticky methoxy-pyrazines (Anteprima 2014).

Borgone Rosso:

Sant’Antimo Rosso DOC, Campo ai Morti: 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Bit stalky and fluffy, starting to fade/go cedary, lacks a middle (Anteprima 2014).

Poderuccio Rosso: 1999 Produced. | 2000 Produced.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC: 2003 Clean, wild, fresh fruit, decent length, some thickness (Anteprima 2005). | 2004 Typical Cab Sauvignon aromas, plenty of colour, chocolate tannins (Anteprima 2006). | 2005 Lacks clarity, difficult vintage (rotten grapes) at Viale Piave 6, Torrenieri Sunday 17 December 2006. | 2011 90,000 bottles. Bit light and simple and a little confected (Anteprima 2013). | 2012 100,000 bottles. Open-knit, sweet fruit, nice weight and red fruit flavour, good tannin, simple and drinkable (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 70,000 bottles. Soft, salty, sapid, good bright and savoury (Anteprima 2015). | 2018 70,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG2000 | Well made, clean, elegant and soft, well balanced, fruit pastilles (Anteprima 2005). | 2001 Youthful chocolate, high acid, bit light but clean (Anteprima 2006). | 2008 170,000 bottles. Simple and light (Anteprima 2013). £30-59.99. Broad, elegant nose, very good example, with broad tannins and ripe, ethereal fruit-blackberry but mainly raspberry and violets-then finishes even and long. 18+ Points. Gold at DWWA 2nd May 2013. | 2009 160,000 bottles. Sweet fruit, a bit too sweet for me, too ripe and soft but very open in terms of style at (Anteprima 2014). | 2009 14%. Clear garnet with some ruby. Open, simple nose. Attractive red cherry, mint and vanilla. Open and welcoming. Simple but attractive tannins, not overwrought, even texture and tidy end. Simple, savoury, satisfying, clear and not trying too hard at the Consorzio Tues 27th May 2014 with Ian d’Agata and others. Salty maybe? | 2010 150,000 bottles. Sweet plump, no great length but well made in terms of extraction (Anteprima 2015). | 2012 Bit dry and orangey, but nice weight, quite salty (Anteprima 2017). | 2014 Plenty of bright, sappy and clear fruit with an underlying saltiness, one of the better 2014 Brunellos in terms of clarity and palate-weight (Anteprima 2019).| 2015 160,000 bottles.
