MEDITERRANEAN BUCKTHORN (Rhamnus alternus) is an evergreen bush with a wood that smells coarse and unpleasant. The small yellowish green flowers are either male or female, but both usually occur on the same plant; from the females develop the berries which ripen through red to black.
