Brunori, ‘a pioneer Verdicchio winery’, (Gambero Rosso: 2003, p.636) located in San Paolo di Jesi in Ancona province in Le Marche region on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It produces white wine under the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC.

Owner: Giorgio Brunori.

Background: Mario Brunori founded the company in 1956, and his son Giorgio was soon working alongside him. The company is now led by Mario’s grandchildren, Carlo and Cristina (who are both sommeliers). The Brunori family’s ancestral home is the town of Cupramontana (Province of Ancona). They have always been producers of Verdicchio wine, but it was not until 1956 that they went from turning out wine in barrels to bottling their product, at the same time opening a sales outlet in the town of Jesi (Province of Ancona). A major turning point was the grape harvest of 1975, which led to the introduction on the market, in 1976, of the San Nicolò’, a Verdicchio wine named for the rural district where its vineyard is located. The first vintage of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore was not presented in the classic amphora-shaped bottle but in Bordeaux-style bottles. Production started with 3,000 bottles of the 1975 harvest, and reached 14,000 bottles in 2007.

Vineyards: The company is located in the San Nicolò quarter of the community of San Paolo di Jesi (AN), at an altitude of 200 metres above sea level. The vineyard extends over 6,5 hectares in the heart of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico zone. Here the terrain is a clay-sandy mix in rolling hills. The vineyards face south-south-east.

Winery: This was originally behind their wine shop in Jesi. It was then moved to San Paolo di Jesi which is nearer the vines.

Winemaking: Hand picked.
