Bolgheri is a ‘frazione’ or territorial subdivision within the commune of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno (Leghorn) in the Alta Maremma or Maremma Settentrionale area on the north Tuscan coast. Bolgheri gives its name to the Bolgheri DOC. The Viale dei Cipressi or ‘Cypress tree way’ forms the approach to Bolgheri dead straight for almost 3.1 miles (five kms). As its name suggests it is lined either side with Italy’s most famed avenue of cypress trees (all 2,000 of them). The trees inspired Giosue Carducci (1835-1907), Italy’s leading poet at the turn of the 20th century, and winner of the 1906 Nobel prize.
