Bodega Alfredo Maestro Tejero in Peñafiel in the Castilla y León region of Spain was founded in 2000 by Alfredo Maestro. It has vineyards in the Ribera del Duero DO but Alfredo Maestro Tejero prefers to label his wines under the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León denomination instead.

Estate vineyards: 2016 23 hectares (56.8 acres).

Terroir: Elevation of750 m to 1,150 metres. Continental climate. Soils of limestone and granite.

Organic Certification: 2021 No.

Wineries: Two, one in Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero) and the other south-west of Madrid in Navalcarnero.

White wines

Lovamor, Albillo2015 Natural style with light pear freshness at the Real Wine Fair in Tobacco Dock 17-18th April 2016.

Pink wines

Amanda Rosado: Made from Alicante Bouschet (‘Garnacha Tintorera) in the El Cuchillejo vineyard planted in the Olmos de Duero valley on calcareous clay soils. 930 metres (3,051 feet). Very short skin contact. Very interesting, good, savoury (Real Wine Fair, Tobacco Dock 17-18th April 2016).

Red wines

Almate: From Tempranillo on two sites, one being on sandy clay along the Rio Duraton near Alfredo’s home town of Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero), and the other at higher altitude in Valtiendas.

El Marciano: The name means ‘Martian’. From granite soils in the Gredos mountains 43-5 miles (70km) west of Madrid. Vines at 1,150 metres (3,773 feet).

Castrillo de Duero:

A Dos Tiempos, Vino de Madrid: Tempranillo and Garnacha bush vines at 670 metres (2,198 feet) on sandy clay in the Navalcarnero bench lands of Madrid.

El Ray del Glam2015 Grenache Noir. 50% from Madrid, 50% from Ribera del Duero. Cab mac. Interesting flavour/texture, very drinkable (Real Wine Fair in Tobacco Dock 17-18th April 2016).

Sweet white wines

La Cosa: The name means ‘the thing’. Moscatel de Alejandria from Segovia, near Valladolid. Grapes are hand picked, then hung to dry for concentrated sweetness.
