Belpoggio is an estate located in Località Bellaria in Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the south-east of the Montalcino region, Tuscany. The Belpoggio name means ‘beautiful hill’, thanks to its magnificent views across Monte Amiata.

Owner: Società Agricola Belpoggio sa. Francesco Martellozzo. His parents Enrico and Renata already owned Bellussi Spumanti of Prosecco fame when they bought Belpoggio in 2005, inheriting the yet to be bottled 2003 and 2004 wines.

Winery: Fermentation in stainless steel. 30-50hl oak vats for ageing.

Red wines

Toscana Rosso IGT, Di Paolo: Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Belpoggio: 2012 8,000 bottles. Light, bit stretched (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 13,500 bottles. Quite tight, pallid colour, red fruit/yoghurt-style, interesting in terms of weight/extract, makes it fruity and fluid/savoury without much complexity (Anteprima 2015). | 2014 Light and fizzy, green, not clear (Anteprima 2016). | 2018 10,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Belpoggio: 2003 Released under the Martellozzos wine but made by the previous owners. | 2003 Released under the Martellozzos wine but made by the previous owners. | 2005 The first Martellozzo made from scratch vintage. | 2008 Typical ripe, spicey olive and herb nose with pretty fruit, a very good example with sweet fruit and savoury tannin, intense, and classic so I scored it 17.5+ points and it was awarded a Bronze at DWWA 2nd May 2013. | 2009 3 years in botti (no barrels). Ripe fruit. ‘We are looking for fluid wines’ Enrico Martellozzo told me (Anteprima 2014). | 2009 14%. L01/14. Slightly dulled ruby garnet with some blur perhaps. Sweet-savoury entry, minor key, quite classic, but sweet and round too. Just a bit of blur to this which is perhaps due to decisions at blending. Has more lift potentially than it is capable of showing in this form I feel at the Consorzio Tues 27th May 2014 with Ian d’Agata and others. | 2010 16,000 bottles. Quite extracted, plenty of delicate fruit, commercial (Anteprima 2015). | 2011 Bit of funk, green blur, green tannins  (Anteprima 2016). | 2014 Light plum fruit, not too over-extracted, plenty of fluidity, more of a Rosso than a Brunello but perfectly pleasurable (Anteprima 2019). | 2015 16,000 bottles.
